What Is a MEID Number?
MEID stands for Mobile Equipment Identifier. Similar to an ESN, every phone has a unique MEID, much like every person has a unique fingerprint. The MEID system replaced the older ESN system for CDMA phones in the United States.
Carriers use MEID numbers to monitor account status, check for past-due bills, and identify devices that have been reported lost or stolen.
How to Find Your MEID
Your MEID can typically be found:
- In your phone’s Settings menu (usually under “About Phone”)
- On a label underneath or beside the battery
- On the original device packaging
MEID Format
- MEID numbers are 14 characters long, consisting of both letters and numbers
- They use the number zero (0), not the letter “O”
What Is a “Bad” MEID?
A “bad” MEID means the phone cannot be activated. This usually happens when the previous owner has an overdue balance or the device was reported lost or stolen. To resolve a bad MEID, you’ll need to contact the carrier or the previous owner.
How to Verify Your MEID Is Clean
Before buying or selling a used phone, always verify the MEID is clean by contacting the carrier (call from a different phone):
- Verizon: 1-800-922-0204
- Sprint: 1-888-211-4727
- US Cellular: 1-888-944-9400
